Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal may have projected BJP's Amritsar candidate Arun Jaitely as the Deputy Prime Minister of a future NDA government, but his deputy CM son Sukhbir Badal thinks the BJP stalwart is likely to be the finance minister under a government headed by Narendra Modi.
"Punjab will get lion's share when Modi will become the prime minister. For one, my father is very close to the BJP and secondly, Jaitely ji after winning from Amritsar, will become the finance minister, either as number two or three in the Modi cabinet," said Sukhbir while addressing rallies in Kartarpur and Jalandhar Cantonment in favour of SAD nominee from Jalandhar Pawan Kumar Tinu.
Notably, Jaitely had to clarify that he was not contesting polls to get any post after the chief minister's Deputy PM remark about him.
However, projecting Jaitely as NDA's finance minister seemed to be the main agenda of Sukhbir's speech in every rally on Tuesday.
"When Jaitely will be holding the finance portfolio, the Centre's coffers will be open for Punjab like never before and then you will witness the unprecedented overall development in the state," he added.
The deputy CM also asked the people to feel proud over the fact that a national leader of Jaitely's stature was contesting polls from Amritsar.
Defensive on the issue of development, especially in Jalandhar where the issue of bad roads has become a major poll plank, the deputy CM blamed heavy rains for the miserable conditions of roads.
"We are ready to repair these roads but the prolonged winter season is to be blamed for the delay as in the winters, carpeting of roads cannot be done," said Sukhbir adding that he has taken the entire control of carpeting of roads under his charge and within two years, every city will be well connected.
Meanwhile, launching a frontal attack on the opposition Congress, Sukhbir said that most of the young leaders from the party have either run away from the battlefield or left their constituencies and the reluctant senior leaders who have been forced to contest are just like antique cannons of the British period, which could be used for decoration but not to defend the castle.
He said that most of the young Congress leaders refused to contest elections after sensing the level of anger against the Congress in the minds of young generation of the country.
