Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will "share responsibilities" with her brother Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in the party's campaign who is "overburdened" with preparations for the 2014 Lok Sabha poll.
In a calibrated approach for the final stage of the campaign, Priyanka will step up her
media presence as another prominent face of the party and also campaign aggressively, Gandhi family friend and key Congress strategist Sam Pitroda told HT on Friday.
"She is already helping her brother and the party a lot. She is a great organizer and all election tours of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi are essentially planned by her," Pitroda said.
Pitroda, who heads the PM's innovation council, had worked closely with Rajiv Gandhi when the latter was the Prime Minister and was widely seen as a key architect of the country's telecom revolution.
"Rahul is currently overburdened and there is a need to share responsibilities. She may come in the forefront of the campaign although she prefers the backroom role and coordination for her brother and the party," Pitroda added.
In the earlier elections, Priyanka had confined herself to campaigning in the Gandhi family bastion of Amethi and Rae Bareli. This time, while her brother leads the party to the poll for the first time, Priyanka's supportive role will not overshadow Rahul's effort but only be to "complement" Rahul.
"Remember, while growing up, they were each other's best friends and remain so. They have a tremendous understanding," Pitroda continued, "But there is an urgent need for all senior leaders to be more aggressive in campaigning."
The question of Priyanka contesting the polls, however, is entirely left for her to decide, party sources added. They also said that barring any last-minute change in plan, she is unlikely to contest in the ensuing polls.
