Hours after transferring eight senior officers of West Bengal on Wednesday, the Election Commission directed the district magistrates of Purulia, Burdwan and Bankura to provide video recordings of the rallies of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, in which she challenged the poll panel. In the rallies, held on Monday, Banerjee had attacked the EC, describing it as an agent of the Congress, BJP and the CPI(M), and was conspiring against her. Her invectives had sent shock waves through the country and experts had pointed out that the CM was actually challenging  the Constitution.

“I will transfer not a single officer. I challenge the Election Commission,” she had said. “I don’t care about anybody. Either accept my resignation or the transfers won’t happen. I challenge the ECI to do anything it likes against me.”

EC officials said the panel has several options – ranging from reprimanding the CM to dragging her to court for challenging the Indian Constitution repeatedly.

“The detailed reports along with video recordings of Mamata Banerjee’s speech will be sent to Delhi. The ECI will then decide the next course of action,” said Sunil Gupta, chief electoral officer, West Bengal.
