“We announced December 19 as our release date first. They (makers of P.K.) have come up with the announcement now. So there’s no question of changing it all over again,” says director Anees Bazmee. The makers of the Aamir-starrer P.K. couldn’t be reached, but insiders insist that they too have “no plan to go back to the Christmas weekend”.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “When a big film releases, no one expects exhibitors to take it out within a week’s time. Plus, when a film is made for Rs. 100 crore, makers see it earning Rs. 200 crore. To make that kind of money, you need a longer run. So, if any film releases on December 25, effectively, it will still compete with the film that released earlier.”
Another trade expert, Taran Adarsh, feels that “December 19 is the best period”. He says, “Worldwide, celebrations start around that time, so I think the makers of Aamir’s film have made a smart move. As to whether this move will affect John’s film, it’s too early to say.”
