The screenplay wastes no time in introducing us to the young Tarzan. The sole survivor of a helicopter accident, he is discovered by a female gorilla who brings up the boy as one of her own.
Tarzan grows into manhood in the jungle, finds love in the form of the beautiful environmentalist Jane (Locke) and takes on a ruthless entrepreneur who believes that an ancient meteorite which caused the accident will make him rich and famous.
The birds, animals and humans who drive the story are vividly brought to life. Just in case you are wondering, the ape-man has his mandatory “me Tarzan, you Jane” encounter and even gets to perform his ever-popular yell. The wall-to-wall music score is an ear-sore, though.
A lightweight adventure, Tarzan will likely impress pre-teen viewers. Accompanying adults, on the other hand, may yearn for a re-run of one of their childhood Tarzan favourites featuring the definitive ape-man, Johnny Weissmuller.
