UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav appeared to be defending Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra’s husband Robert Vadra on Monday, accusing the BJP of blowing the issue of his land deals out of proportion. At election rally in Barabanki’s  Jaidpur, without naming Vadra, Yadav said, “The BJP is blowing the land issue out of proportion. This is not a big thing.

“Which party does not give land to companies to set up project for the development of the area when it comes to power? By creating hype over the issue, BJP is distracting the attention of the people,” he added.

Later, addressing a gathering after a road-show in Lucknow, he attacked BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, saying his name stood for “Model of Dividing India”, since “Modi wants to divide the country on the caste and religious lines”.

The giant road-show – held to drum up support for SP candidate  -- threw the city’s traffic out of gear. The vehicles were fitted with high definition music system, giant LED screens, and the party symbol bicycle. The party anthem —“Man Se Mulayam” —an adaptation of Billy Joel chartbuster “We didn’t start the fire”, blared.

Modi, Yadav said, was made the prime ministerial candidate due to pressures from the VHP and the RSS, but his intention would never be fulfilled. “Only propaganda of Modi is being carried out and in reality, the BJP is nowhere,” he added.
