Around 13.93 lakh voters will exercise their franchise at 1,677 polling booths in Fatehgarh Sahib constituency on Wednesday.

Of these 7.37 lakh are men and 6.55 lakh women. As many as 43,706 new voters have been added to the list. There are 15 candidates in fray but the main contest is between SAD-BJP candidate Kulwant Singh, a realtor turned politician; Congress candidate Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Aam Aadmi Party’s Harinder Singh Khalsa.

According to returning officer Arun Sekhri, the polling will start at 7 am and will conclude at 6 pm. Sekhri said more than 8,000 employees had been deployed for the polls. The counting will be held on May 16. 

As many as 18 booths were declared hypersensitive and 135 sensitive in the district. The police claimed that they had made adequate security arrangements. Sekhri told HT that they had ensured that the election was peaceful for which they had deployed paramilitary forces at some booths and installed webcasting and micro-observers at others. Besides, there would be videography at some booths, he added.

Sekhri said their aim was to keep a strict surveillance at all 513 booths in Fatehgarh Sahib district. He said he was personally visiting all booths to check the arrangements.
