The Sahara Group’s Subrata Roy has been provided another fan in his cell in west Delhi’s Tihar Jail where he has been lodged since early March instead of a desert cooler.
This was after jail authorities, sources said, were able to make Roy understand that a fan was a ‘better option’ and
‘actually for his own good’ and in the interests of water conservation.
“The cell where Roy and two others from the Sahara Group are lodged has iron bars in its windows. Not only is getting a cooler fixed there against the jail manual but it wouldn’t be a good idea because of scientific reasons,” the official added.
When Roy, through his counsels, submitted a plea before the Supreme Court that it pass its order early as it was getting difficult for him to bear the Delhi heat behind bars on April 30, authorities at west Delhi’s largest prison facility decided to reason it out with him.
“We told him that the iron bars of his windows get hot due to the heat; if a cooler was fixed, all it would do is blow hot air inside the cell,” said the official.
“We told him that we would need to keep pumping water into the cooler, which would amount to no good considering our internal water conservation policy. He nodded in agreement and happily settled for a portable fan,” the official added.
Roy and his associate executives are currently sharing a cell that had earlier housed convicts sent to jail for their involvement in the 2G scam.
“He is quite particular about his medicines and doesn’t miss a single dose. He has no complaints about the food he is given from the prison canteen and appears rather gloomy these days,” said another official.
Jail authorities said Roy looks forward to the meetings he has with his family twice a week. “That’s actually the only time he looks happy,” the official added.
Roy and the other two directors of the group have been in judicial custody since March 4 for not abiding by the apex court’s order of depositing `20,000 crore of investors’ money with Sebi.
