Taking up a petition by Jhajjar residents for directions to the Haryana government to return their land that was acquired for "public purpose" in 2007 and, later, handed over to Reliance for an upcoming special economic zone (SEZ), the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday issued notices to the Haryana government and Reliance.

The petition filed by Balwan Singh and others of Badsah village came up for hearing before the court headed by justice Surya Kant. The state government and Reliance have to submit the reply by October 13.

The petitioner said that when the SEZ now had been de-notified and Reliance was handing the land back to the state, their land should also be restored to them instead of it being leased out for `1 crore per acre to private companies such as Panasonic. In 2007, the state government had purchased the land from farmers for `22-lakh per acre.
