Five bombers in two SUVs carried out the attack that killed 31 people and injured more than 94 in Urumqi the capital of the remote and restive Xinjiang region in western China, a state media report said Friday.
On Thursday morning, the suspects ploughed their vehicles into an open
air market in the heart of Urumqi, lobbing explosives while the cars rolled into the crowd.
“Five suspects who participated in the violent terrorist attack blew themselves up,” the Global Times, a state-run newspaper of the Communist Party of China, reported on Friday.
“Judging from the many terrorist attacks that have taken place and the relevant perpetrators, they have received support from terrorist groups outside China's borders as well as religious extremist propaganda spread via the internet,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said at a daily news briefing.
“The horrific attack was the second in Urumqi in three weeks after a train station knife and bomb attack left three dead and 79 injured on April 30, and the deadliest in recent years in Xinjiang. It followed another deadly attack at a rail station in southwest China's Kunming, which left 29 dead,” the official news agency, Xinhua said in a commentary.
“The latest attack shocked and outraged China and the world. The downright anti-human massacre committed by terrorists deserves the strongest condemnation and severest punishment with no lenience,” the commentary added.
State media said justice had to be done.
“Will the Chinese government stand idly by, mere observers of the violence and crime? Will the "social cancer" of terrorism be uprooted and banished, completely and resolutely? Will stability and peace reign in Xinjiang? The answers to these questions are clear, obvious and uncontroversial,” it said.
It added: “Justice will be done - not vengeance, not terror breeding terror: Justice. Justice for the dead and the living, the guilty and the innocent. The war against the terrorists will be persistent and complicated, but it will be won. It will be ended. There will be only one winner, and that winner will be the people,”
