A 20-year-old woman threw acid at her male friend in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old victim had reportedly turned down her proposal for marriage several times.
The teen suffered burn injuries in his face and was taken to GTB Hospital from where he was
discharged on Wednesday.
The accused, Kalpana, lives with her mother and other family members in Kartar Nagar colony in the area. She is yet to be arrested.
Sunil Kumar, a BA student of Delhi University, was just outside his home when the incident took place. Kalpana, who is believed to be his girlfriend, came to discuss her marriage plans and the discussion soon turned into a heated argument.
Kalpana soon went home and came out with a bottle containing some liquid, which she threw at Sunil.
On noticing the commotion, a few neighbours and families of the couple arrived at the spot and intervened. The police were called and Sunil was rushed to the hospital.
“Prima facie we suspect that the bottle contained phenyl, which is used for cleaning toilets. The sample of the liquid has been sent to forensic science laboratory (FSL) to ascertain if the bottle contained acid. An FIR has been registered and probe is on,” said Sanjay Beniwal, joint commissioner of police (eastern range).
Preliminary investigation into the incident, an investigating officer said, revealed that Kalpana and Sunil had been in a relationship for some time. “Kalpana wanted to marry Sunil and had been pressuring him on the issue. However, Sunil was not interested in marrying her and had been ignoring her for few days,” the officer added.
This is the first time that a woman has attacked a man with acid. So far, mostly women have been victims of acid attacks.
