Accused of sexually assaulting a junior colleague during an event in Goa last November, Tejpal was arrested on November 30. On May 18, he was given interim bail to attend his mother’s funeral.
Salman Khurshid appeared for Tejpal and contended it was imperative for him to perform the ceremony as he missed the last rites held on May 19.
“By the virtue of red tape he could not attend his mother’s cremation. We should now do something to redeem it. Also, why do you need him in jail? Are you interrogating him? Twenty-one days is all he wants,” the bench told counsel for Goa who opposed the plea vehemently.
The plea for his permanent release is likely to be heard on July 7.
Khurshid defends Tejpal
Former law minister Salman Khurshid defended Tarun Tejpal of the sexual assault charges under the new law that was introduced by the UPA. Khurshid said the alleged act, if any, committed by his client wasn’t violent against the victim. “He is being tried under the new law and there are technical issues involved in the case.”
