The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) on Tuesday became the country’s first educational institute to get a super computer.
The fastest type of computers, these rare machines are employed for specialized applications that require immense amounts of mathematical calculations
like those in the fields of weather forecasting, fluid dynamic calculations, nuclear energy research and petroleum exploration.
IIT-K’s deputy director SC Srivastava, who unveiled the top ranked super computer, said the newly acquired computer would open new horizons of research in different fields at the institute.
Insisting that the super computer acquired by IIT-K was ranked 130 in the top 500 super computers of the world by http://wwwtop500org, Srivastava claimed the super computer has the peak performance of 307.2 Terra Flops and a realized performance of 294.9 Terra flop.
He said the super computer would help in data collection, understanding the airflow around an aircraft and the molecular simulations.
With the institute having its own aerospace engineering department, it would help the students and research scholars in designing the most perfect aircrafts after understanding the airflow system minutely, said one of the professors of the aerospace department.
In addition to it, the super computer would help the scientists working on developing the most scientific agriculture forecasting system at the institute.
The super computer would provide the most accurate information about the weather condition to prevail in the long term and would help the group of scientists busy in developing Agropedia, an online knowledge repository for information related to agriculture in India.
Brijesh Pandey, a computer scientist, said the computer could be used in understanding the secrets of the galaxy and to understand the critical and incurable diseases through genetic studies. It could also help in developing the most effective pacemakers by simulating the heartbeats of the people suffering from cardiac diseases.
Ashish Dutta, head, computer centre, said the super computers were used in many areas of science and engineering research and a large number of researchers across disciplines were involved in high performance computing.
Eminent computer scientists from all over the world were present at the launch of computer here. Besides, over 200 students of different technical institutes were also invited.
