Eight days after the ghastly gangrape and murder of two minor girls in Badaun district on May 27, the dead body of a 15-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in Beniyapur village in Sitapur district, 70km from Lucknow on Tuesday night.

The girl went out of her house to ease herself but when she didn’t return, her family members’ search ended when they found her hanging from a tree 150 metres from home.

Her father said she was raped before being hanged by six youths from the village. He said one of them, Ramesh, who had been pressing her to marry him but had been rebuffed by his daughter, had threatened her with dire consequences. The local police have registered a case of murder against the absconding youths after a medical panel ruled out rape.

Sitapur superintendent of police Tehsildar Singh, however, said a preliminary probe suggested she committed suicide by hanging herself with her dupatta. “No injury mark was found on the body. A domestic dispute might be the reason for her suicide,” he said, adding that interrogation of the accused could reveal why she died.
