DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal sought discharge from a 2G scam-related money laundering case on the grounds that she suffered from dementia and was unable to defend herself. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed her discharge, but remained silent on the question of granting her bail.

Special CBI Judge O P Saini adjourned till July 2 the hearing on bail pleas and framing of charges against the accused, including Dayalu Ammal, former Telecom Minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi.

A Raja’s counsel, Advocate Babanjeet Singh, requested that a concerned officer from the secretary general of the Lok Sabha be produced before the court as a witness. The officer would rebut the allegations of conspiracy, said Singh. The court allowed the application, and directed for a request letter be sent to the secretary general of the Lok Sabha.
