“We have no record either in police or in the local intelligence unit about his association with the BJP”, said Rakesh Jolly, SP (crime) Muzaffarnagar.
Jolly told HT on the phone that Omveer — a retired army man and a moneylender — was shot while on the way to his farm on the fringe of Nangla Khepad village in Meerapur.
However, the BJP spokesperson in up, Vijay Bahadur Pathak, confirmed that Omveer was a party leader and was actively involved in the panchayati raj cell.
“He was a member of the BJP. Even if we agree with their claims about the deceased was not a member of the BJP, does this absolve them of their responsibility to provide security to everyone in the state?” Pathak said. The body of the deceased has been sent for postmortem. “We are collecting information about suspects. Teams have been formed to nab the perpetrators,” said the SP.
