The explosion was triggered using an IED which was planted on a stolen motorcycle parked at the entrance of the police station.
The ATS sources while pointing suspicion at the Indian Mujahiddin said the temple has been on the terror radar. The temple in the past had received threats with Indian Mujahiddin operative Qateel Siddiqui even making an unsuccessful attempt to blow it up in 2010.
Siddiqui had made a failed bid to plant a bomb in the temple premises. However an alert flower vendor prevented him from placing the bag. Siddiqui, who was in Yerwada jail for his act, was later strangled to death by local gangster Sharad Mohol.
Police sources, pointing to the chargesheet filed in the Siddiqui case said that the IM operative in his conversation with fellow inmates at Yerwada jail had boasted of making a second attempt to blow up the temple.
“We are probing all the angles without ruling out anything,” police commissioner Satish Mathur said. Home minister RR Patil said the reasons and who is behind the blast is not clear yet. “All these things will be clear only after the investigation,” he said.
