There are around 1 lakh consumers who have not received their bills for the last cycle and people are clueless about the next course of action.“We are not sure how and when to pay our bi-monthly bill as we have not received a copy,” said Harbans Kaur, resident of Sector 38. She also expressed apprehensions on whether they would be penalised for the delay in paying the bill.
With no record of the last cycle, the electricity department has started issuing average bills and the actual amount will be settled when the system is restored.
When contacted, UT superintending engineer MP Singh said that of the four groups of 50,000 consumers each, bills of two groups had been generated and delivered and the remaining two groups would get their bills by next week.
“Consumers will be given sufficient time to pay their bills and no one will be penalised,” added Singh.
In this regard, a meeting of officials of the UT electricity department with NIELIT staff was held on Wednesday. The NIELIT has asked the electricity department to provide duplicate bills till May. NIELIT is now operating from three make-shift offices at Sectors 11, 26 and 17.
THE WAY FORWARD: 1. Average bills are being issued. 2. Outstanding amount will be settled in next bill. 3. Consumers are being given sufficient time to make payment of current bill.
