Constant rejections from airlines for being too thin forced a 24-year-old woman to commit suicide at her home in east Delhi’s Lalita Park.
Aruna Singh, an aspiring airhostess, had been under treatment for weight gain but was unhappy with the results. With a height of 5’2’’ and weighing
mere 37 kg, Aruna had been unable to find a job as a stewardess and had been depressed.
The ideal weight for a woman of her height should be between 50 and 54kgs.
Her family members claimed that as part of her ‘treatment’ Aruna was on a rigorous diet schedule and was diligently following the prescribed diet, but nothing had worked.
“She had worked as a ground staff for a few private airlines around five months ago but had called it quits. She wanted to be an airhostess and was being treated by a private clinic to gain weight and get back to the job. We are a wealthy family and there was no pressure on her to work,” said Rajesh Singh, her uncle.
After her father’s death, Singh and her four siblings had moved to her uncle’s home in Delhi, leaving their mother in their family home in Dhingrapur village of Uttar Pradesh. Relatives claim that Aruna’s depression over her career had worsened after one of her younger sisters got a job in Mumbai.
“She was the eldest among her three sisters and a brother. After she left her job, she had grown more silent but we never knew she was so depressed over her appearance. She may have been thin, but was otherwise healthy,” added Rajesh.
In the Singh household, Wednesday had unfolded like any other regular day. Aruna was sitting with her sister Khushboo on the ground floor after which she went upstairs to her second-floor room and locked herself in. Her cousin Rohit phoned her repeatedly to inform that he would reach home late, but she did not take any calls. “Then I called Khushboo who told me that Aruna had locked herself in her room. I immediately reached home and broke open the door to find that she had hung herself from the ceiling fan,” said Rohit.
According to the police, this was a clear case of suicide though no suicide note has been found near her body. “The victim had apparently applied to several airlines but had been rejected every time. Her treatment was also not yielding the desired results. Perhaps, that’s why she took this drastic step,” said a police official.
