World renowned yoga guru Bellur Krishnamachar Sundaraja (BKS) Iyengar passed away in Pune wee hours on Wednesday following poor heart functioning coupled with the renal insufficiency, doctors operating him said. He was 96.
Iyengar breathed last at 3.00 am at Prayag hospital where he
was undergoing treatment since last week after he faced difficulty in breathing. Since Sunday he was put on dialysis due to renal failure.
A recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan awards, yoga exponent Iyengar taught his skills to people from across the world for over five decades. Founder of the Iyengar school of yoga, Iyengar had legions of followers and admirers internationally.
Prior to admitting in the hospital, yoga guru preferred treatment at his Model colony home from family physician. However as his health deteriorated, the family members convinced him for hospitalization, said a relative.
His family members said the last rights on Iyengar will be performed around 1 pm in Pune.
Prime minister Narendra Modi in his message
said, “Generations will remember Shri BKS Iyengar as a fine Guru, scholar & a stalwart who brought Yoga into the lives of many across the world. I am deeply saddened to know about Yogacharya BKS Iyengar's demise & offer my condolences to his followers all over the world.”
Iyengar rediscovered yoga by changing some of its techniques to deliver maximum impact. Suffering from various ailments in his teenage such as tuberculosis, influenza and malaria, BKS was knocked cold by his guru at Mysore that if he could not master an asana.
“I was put on deadline to exhibit my skills within a month. I proved myself and bagged prize,” the yoga guru had narrated in one of his most recent interview given to Marathi television channel IBN Lokmat.
It took six years for Iyengar to get his health back through yoga after he shifted to Pune in 1937. After practicing yoga for 13 years, Iyengar mastered the art and began teaching yoga, which he later took at global stage.
