A minor dalit girl was murdered after being gang raped by some unidentified persons in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred in Balisahi village, about 170 km south of Bhubaneswar, on Thursday, but came to light after the postmortem of her body revealed she was raped before being murdered.

“Preliminary inquiry has revealed more than one persons strangulated the girl after raping her. We are looking for those involved in the crime,” sub-divisional police officer RC Sethi said.

According to a complaint by the family members of the 17-year-old girl, she had gone to work in a paddy field along with her father in the morning. After finishing the work in the field in the afternoon, she left for home while her father went out for some other work. When he returned home in the evening, he did not find her at home.

Family members and villagers searched for her and found her body in the night near a mango orchard near the village with her hands and legs tied. They informed the police who recovered the body, which had also injury marks, for postmortem.
