“The DGMOs agreed to hold flag meetings by both armies and that the BSF would defuse the situation,” the officer said.
Defence minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday held a meeting with the national security adviser, defence secretary and the three service chiefs to discuss the security scenario in the country and its neighbourhood.
A source said the issue of repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC and the international border was also discussed during the meeting that went on for more than an hour.
There have been 96 ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the LoC this year and 25-odd violations on the international border.
The two DGMOs had met and held talks for the first time in 14 years at the Attari-Wagah border last December. Both armies had then decided to strengthen the existing border mechanisms and uphold the ceasefire pact. However, Pakistan’s repeated violations of the November 2003 truce and the increase in border violations indicates that efforts to make the weekly hotline contact between the two DGMOs “more effective and result-oriented” have not met with success.
