“The cabinet concluded that this system is causing problems. Sometimes people do not need one but during festive season demand is more. There was a feeling that if on a given month a cylinder is not taken, it won’t be given later,” telecom and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
Fom the 13th cylinder onwards, cooking gas has to be purchased at market rate of Rs. 920 per 14.2-kg cylinder.
The UPA, in February, had raised the number of subsidised LPG cylinders to 12 from nine, but also introduced the one-month-one-cylinder policy.
