The hot contender is of course the Sri Lankan-born Australian Dav Whatmore.
The Aussie made his interest evident months ago and seemed to have all but wrapped up the job. However, with some BCCI members saying the ‘Indian or foreigner?’ debate is not yet over and some players suggesting a couple of other names, there’s been a certain amount of ambiguity.
Having said that, Whatmore is still the hottest candidate around, at least in some quarters of the Indian Board.
“Whatmore has a very bright chance,” BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah told HT on Sunday.
The panel, comprising former captains S Venkataraghavan, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, and BCCI office bearers Sharad Pawar (president), Shah, MP Pandove (joint secretary) and N Srinivasan (treasurer), will discuss the credentials of Whatmore and a couple of others, possibly former South African and current Kent coach Graham Ford and India's own Gundappa Viswanath. Some say they could even spring a surprise and go for one of their own, asking Venka-taraghavan to take charge for now.
In 24 hours, we’ll know more.
