Pritam Chakraborthy goes do-re-me
with Rachana Dubey
. You must be purring with the reaction to Jab We Met?
Yup, I rarely say this but I'm quite happy with my work. Actually, I'm a love story person.. ironically, till now I've
got to do the highest number of item songs and the least number of love stories. Apparently, you'd been approached only to compose the song Mauja hi mauja.
True, but then the song picturisations were staggered for me. My marriage had happened simultaneously . Eventually, I did the entire soundtrack because I loved the film's concept from the time I'd read the script.
The team was patience personified. According to (director) Imtiaz Ali, Mauja hi mauja falls under the jhootha Punjabi category because apart from the lyrics everything else is underground hip-hop.
"I would never hesitate to replace a seasoned voice like KK's or Sonu's for a new boy who walks into my studio and does a better job than them. This has happened, at times."
What has happened to the case against the Hare Krishna hare Ram song from Bhool Bhulaiyya?
The case was withdrawn. Actually, a religious group took offence to some scantily dressed women dancing before the statue of Gautam Buddha. I'm sure Bhooshan Kumar is not insane to do this just for a promotional music video.. how can he even think of hurting religious sentiments? After being told about the case, he chopped off the so-called offensive portion. So, the matter was solved amicably.
Why are your item-type of songs pushed to the film's final credits.. when the audience starts leaving anyway?
I agree but I think it's become a trend nowadays, whether it was in Bhagam Bhag, Garam Masala or Bhool Bhulaiyya. Now I hear that the title track of Bhool Bhulaiyya which was only meant to be promotional, has been shifted to Akshay's entry. I. haven't checked this out though.
Now tell me about your trade secrets?
New lyricists and singers. My music sounds fresh because of them. One cannot ignore certain demands in commercial cinema but these little experiments make a difference. There's been something edgy about working with singers like James, Labh Janjua, Mohit Chauhan, Zubeen Garg, Soham, Suhail and Mika Singh. Actually, Mika has a hero's voice.
I've brought back voices like Remo and Amit Kumar. I would never hesitate to replace a seasoned voice like KK's or Sonu's for a new boy who walks into my studio and does a better job than them. This has happened, at times. That's why there will always be new singers in all my soundtracks.
"I opted for the Amul Voice of India Little Champs
because the channel's set-up suits me more. Also, the Zee show required me to start shooting by September-end which I couldn't."
Why have you replaced lyricist Sayeed Qadri with Irshad Kamil in your team?
Team? You think I'm playing football here? As for Irshad bhai replacing Sayeed bhai, that's false. Irshad bhai is brilliant, he's done Chameli and Socha Na Tha. His lyrics, particularly Tum se hi (Jab We Met) inspired the composition. I'd just married Smita then. Sayeed bhai and I are still working together.
Do you think you goofed up on some scores, like say Dhol and Raqeeb?
See, I took on more than what I could handle. I would keep studio hopping. I didn't have a life. You guys reported that I didn't even go for a honeymoon.
Jokes apart, sometimes I'd be extremely confused about which project I was working on. Mukesh Bhatt even advised me to stop behaving like a Tirupati nai who shaves half-a-head at a time. Now, I'm clearing my backlog before taking on anything new.
What happened to your Band Metro?
James is in Bangladesh. The rest of us are working on our album here. It will take some time because we want it to be special.. especially after the success of Metro. After the film, there were several concert and album offers.
Why did you back out of Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Little Champs show?
I opted for the Amul Voice of India Little Champs because the channel's set-up suits me more. Also, the Zee show required me to start shooting by September-end which I couldn't. Star's show starts in November which I could accommodate.
