A Beacon-studded vehicle driven by the son of Samajwadi Party MLA ran over eight pavement dwellers, killing four of them on the spot while seriously injuring eight others on Friday night. Among the six injured; three people including two motorcyclists were said to be in a critical state.

Arrested from the spot, the accused, Kashif Abbas (17), confessed to the police that he had lost control over the vehicle, as he was drunk. Apart from lodging a case for rash driving, the usage of the red-beacon on the vehicle was not permissible. Moreover, being underage, Kashif did not have a driving license.

While talking to Hindustan Times, Kashif seemed unnerved about the accident, saying that he lost control over his vehicle when he suddenly saw two motorists coming from the opposite direction at an almost equal speed. The motorcyclists, Anil and Raja, are now battling for life in a trauma centre.

Banto Devi, a pavement dweller miraculously escaped the mishap. She said that the vehicle ran over Hasan, Lakshman, Jagdish, Ramu, Lukman, Chand Babu, Hashim and Hasan’s unidentified 13-year-old nephew before finally ramming into an electricity pole.

A few passers-by and people standing outside the hotel rushed to the spot and caught Kashif in the driver’s seat of the car. As soon as the information reached the police, they rushed to the spot and took the accused to the station to avoid mob frenzy.

A student of IIPM-Delhi, Kashif Abbas is the son of MLA Shadab Fatima and PWD executive engineer Nasim Haider. Fatima is the chairperson of UP Upbhokta Sahakari Sangh and is minister of the state.
