The number of autos plying in the capital is pegged at 55,000 while there are about 8,000 taxis.
The move, said a senior traffic officer, has been necessitated following a number of incidents where cab and auto-drivers drugged passengers, robbed and even killed them.
A large number of tourists are expected to visit the Capital for the Games and biometric cards will help ensure their safety.
According to joint commissioner of police (traffic) SN Shrivastava, the process to issue biometric cards to taxi drivers operating from the Delhi airport has already started. “We had received 2,500 applications for biometric cards. We are issuing the cards after proper verification of each driver,” he said.
While converting auto and taxi permits to optical-based smart cards, the transport department is also asking vehicle owners to submit the details of three drivers who would be driving the vehicle.
