In South Africa, access to the playing area is remarkably easy, with spectators only needing to cross a short advertising hoarding before they are in touching distance of the players.
For the moment, the ICC is reacting with guarded caution. “Following last night’s brief incursion at Centurion, a review was called for and an enhanced set of security measures will be in place for the rest of the tournament,” a spokesperson said.
“A number of arrests were made and those people have been prosecuted,” the spokesperson said. “Any spectator who invades the pitch can expect to be arrested, prosecuted and if found guilty, fined under current South African legislation.”
