The two months ban during the breeding season would ensure augmentation of fish stocks in the water bodies of the state, he said.
But the State Government's response had been limited to statements that a proposal to this effect was under consideration, he alleged.
Stating that many countries across the world had banned fishing during the breeding season, Mohanty said this had been done after fishery experts warned of the danger of extinction to the fish species.
States like Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had already imposed the ban. But Orissa Government seemed to be dragging its feet over the vital issue, he said.
