The BJP in Punjab said the proposed amensty to Sikhs who left the country at the peak of militancy in the state should strictly be confined to those among them who believed in the Indian Constitution and genuinely wanted to join the mainstream. On its alliance partner SAD pitching for amnesty to Sikhs who left the country after eruption of militancy in the state, newly elected state BJP Chief Avinash Sharma told reporters that his party was not opposed to the idea but stressed that initiative should be meant only for those Sikhs who believe in the Indian Constitution and wanted to join the mainstream leaving behind thoughts of separatism.

"We do not want that amnesty should be given to anti-national elements and we will oppose the same", Sharma said.

Meanwhile, he said BJP President Nitin Gadkai would unveil the statue of Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and address a public rally along with party stalwart L K Advani and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at Modhopur in Pathankot on March 20.

He said he would soon restructure the party's state unit and announce his new team before the visit of the party President.
