A week before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the United States, US Ambassador Timothy J Roemer said that the issue of granting India access to Lashkar-e-Tayyeba operative David Headley was being taken up by the US government at the highest level. Speaking after a meeting with Home Minister P Chidambaram and Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, Roemer said: “I just had a very successful meeting with the Home Minister where I talked about working very closely for cooperation with government of India and government of US on counter-terrorism issues.”
 
India has been seeking access to Headley, an American of Pakistani-origin, to get details of his activities regarding the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and plans for further strikes in India.

Headley was arrested in the US in October 2009 and has been charged with helping plan the 26/11 terror attacks that killed 173 people.
 
The charges filed in Chicago’s federal court allege that he conducted extensive surveillance of targets in Mumbai for more than two years preceding the 2008 attacks.
