SHDDC has been demanding conversion of Sadar Hills area which lies under Manipur’s Senapati district, into a full-fledged revenue district.
“The blockade may be extended if there is positive response from the government within the blockade period,” SHDDC president Ngamkhohao Haokip said. “We’re also appealing to all transporters and masses to cooperate during the agitation.”
Decrying the successive government’s inability to declare Sadar Hills as a new district,he further said that Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous district council Act, 1971 which was enacted prior to the Manipur statehood to give protection to the hill people, has empowered the state to adjust its district boundaries.
Similarly, the people of Jiribam,a sub-divisional headquarter under Imphal East district but borders with Assam’s Cachar district, have also been demanding conversion of Jiribam into a district status for its administration convenience.
Jiribam District Demand Committee sponsored public meeting attended by Jiribam Municipal Council councilors,Jilla Parishad members and other civil society leaders on Thursday has also resolved to stage a mass protest rally on August 2 as part of intensifying their agitation. Presently Manipur has as many as nine districts-4 in valley and 5 in hills.
