When his elder brother underwent angioplasty last August, Partha Ghosh could no longer ignore the risks to his own health.
The 46-year-old Bandra resident weighed 121 kg and had already been prescribed medicines for hypertension and high cholesterol. With a high-pressure job as partner in a
chartered accountancy firm and regular binging on potato chips and fried food, Ghosh wasn’t a contender in the battle against the bulge.
“My brother’s angioplasty made me realise that I need to change my lifestyle. With a family history of heart ailments, I knew I was at risk,” he said.
His family doctor advised him to undergo a cardiac check-up. “The results showed I was at a high risk of developing a heart disease and need to reduce at least 20 kg.”
A year later, Ghosh weighs 88 kg, follows an exercise regime and a strictly controlled diet. “I was overweight mainly because of my eating habits. I loved eating fries and sweets. I shifted to a diet that includes green salads, leafy vegetables and less carbohydrates,” he said.
Ghosh also registered for a preventive cardiology and rehabilitation programme at the Asian Heart Institute in Bandra-Kurla Complex. “We planned a personalised programme of lifestyle modifications, including diet, exercise, stress management and counselling for Ghosh,” said Dr Aashish Contractor, head, preventive cardiology and rehabilitation centre.
The LH Hiranandani Hospital in Powai and Cumballa Hill Hospital at Kemps Corner also run cardiac rehabilitation centres.
Ghosh exercises thrice a week at the gym. “I never skip my exercise regime and follow my diet,” he said.
“Ghosh is doing well and appears more confident. A lower body weight has significantly reduced his risk of heart disease,” said Dr Contractor.
