As the extreme cold froze water taps and dried up geysers, people have started using firewood and kerosene oil for heat. The cooking gas, already running in shortage, is being used judiciously.
"We want a proactive administration to restore the basic necessities of life within shortest possible time after snowfall. Unfortunately, despite tall claims of disaster readiness by the government, we have been let down badly," said Abdual Majeed, a banker of old city. "For the past three days the children are locked inside."
Functioning of ATMs was also hampered causing inconvenience to people. Telephone, mobile and internet connectivity have also been hit causing problems to media persons, students and business establishments.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah told media persons said the situation would return to normal on Monday.
