Police on Wednesday detained seven students in connection with the alleged murder of an engineering student of Amity University, which has closed down for four days. Over 100 students agitated on the campus, demanding the removal of vice-chancellor Raj Singh.

On Monday evening, the deceased, Prashant Veer, 22, a third-year B.Tech student, was beaten and stabbed, allegedly by his juniors, following an altercation on Monday night. Veer was from Bijnor district of UP and a hosteller.

Among the detained students, Puneet Jat, Ajay Singh and Gaurav Yadav are the prime suspects. The incident was a result of old disputes, the police said. Tension prevailed in the university. On Tuesday night some students damaged the institute building and canteen.

The students alleged the police used force to disperse the agitators. Veer’s father, Veer Pal Singh, who reached Jaipur on Wednesday, said: “The administration is responsible for my son’s death. The vice-chancellor declined to meet us.”

The students said the deceased could have been saved had the varsity administration acted in time. “Nobody came to rescue him...,” alleged a classmate of the deceased.
