Seventh in the series and fourth to debut on the PlayStation 3, God of War: Ascension's first official trailer pegs it as a spring 2013 release.

It's to be an origin story, again focusing on musclebound Greek warrior Kratos, with the implication being that God of War: Ascension will take place prior to the events of 2005's PlayStation 2 hit (and now PlayStation 3 re-issue) God of War -- just as the later PSP/PS3 prequel God of War: Chains of Olympus did.

Like the Assassin's Creed games, Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS, Persona role-playing adventures, or Titan Quest on the PC, the God of War games take inspiration from ancient myths and legends -- specifically, the pantheon of ancient Greek gods and the earthly realms through which they walked.
