Tigmanshu plays villain in Kashyap’s film
Director Tigmanshu Dhulia will make his acting debut acting as a villain in filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. Kashyap said that Dhulia has a significant role and will be seen throughout the film that will be released in two parts.
“The longest role in the film is of Tigmanshu Dhulia who plays the villain. He is a National School of Drama (NSD) graduate and is an outstanding actor. We have seen his talent as a director and now we’ll get to see his acting calibre for the first time. He plays the role of a 40-year-old to a 90-year-old man. You have to see his performance to believe it,” says an elated Kashyap whose film will be screened at Cannes this year.
The film, primarily based on the coal mafia in Dhanbad (Jharkhand), is about the true lives of the people living in a remote region called Wasseypur. Other actors in the film besides Dhulia are Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Syed Zeeshan Quadri and Richa Chadda.
The entire film, which is five hours and twenty minutes long, was shot at one stretch. “We shot the whole film at one go. It took us around seven months to do it,” says Kashyap. Asked if it was difficult to divide the film in two parts Kashyap says, “It took us around a year to cut it into two parts and make it into two individual films. We knew that it would take quite long so the script was written in two parts too, so the first film has a proper end and the second one has a proper start. But it’s a continuation of the same story.”
Kashyap adds that besides the lead cast, there are around 340 other characters in the film. “We had adopted almost an entire village and have shot every person there.” He has also featured his own house in the film, he says. “Manoj Bajpai’s house in the film is where my brother and I were born. This has now become a ghostly town. It’s in Orba in UP. That’s the house where we grew up together,” he says.
