Ayushmann Khurrana has done practically everything it takes to pave the way to Bollywood. After winning a reality show on MTV to being a VJ/host for the same channel and television shows on other channels, his immediate next step wasn’t a surprise. And with Vicky Donor (VD) and his self-composed
song rocking the charts, he’s closer to achieving stardom already.
But why this delayed entry in films? “Since I don’t come from a film background, I had to be careful with my choices,” he replies. “And TV kept me busy and it still does, so no regrets for a late debut.”
On his expectations from VD, Ayushmann says, “I expected some criticism but it was nice to receive admiration from so many. VD got critical acclaim and numbers too.” On his confident disposition as a fresh actor vis-à-vis other debutants he says, “I’ve done theatre in the past and have been acting for four years now. Since I’m so used to looking at the camera while hosting, things were slightly difficult initially.”
VD was actor John Abraham’s first venture as a producer and Ayushmann’s as an actor. He was paired with debutant Yami Gautam. Would a seasoned co-star have made any difference to his acting? Ayushmann says, “I don’t think so, as it would still have been my first film. Besides, Yami was great to work with.”
Ayushmann also worked with Annu Kapoor, an actor he greatly admires. “Annuji has been acting for around 30 years now, which is more than my age! He is a highly experienced and proficient actor as he comes from a strong theatre background,” says Ayushmann.
About his next film, Humara Bajaj, another John Abraham production, he says, “It’s a film about a struggling actor who eventually becomes a star.”
