US President Barack Obama tweeted his support of gay marriage May 9 in a historic message that read "Same sex couples should be able to get married."- President Obama.
Since then that message has swept across the microblogging site being retweeted over 54, 000 times.

The tweet easily passed Twitter's maximum retweet count of 50, but a live tally of the number of re-tweets is available at http://retweetingobama.com/.

At the time of writing Twitter has not yet confirmed whether the popularity of Barack Obama's tweet constitutes a record of some kind for the microblogging site.

The most retweeted tweet of 2011 was from Wendy's restaurant which pledged to donate 5 cents to foster children for every retweet, though Twitter refused to confirm the exact number of retweets and the period over which the retweets took place.

According to Twitter monitoring blogs such as mediabistro.com, Justin Bieber has to date the most retweeted message ever with 87,882 retweets of his message "I'M SEXY AND I KNOW IT".
