The initial few hours after the 28-year-old US national made a PCR call about an IPL player molesting her in a room in ITC Maurya was a testing time for the Delhi Police as the woman herself was not aware of the identity of the accused.
Since the RCB team was staying in the same hotel, it
was difficult for the police to question each and every player.
However, it was sheer luck that the accused — Luke Pomersbach — was identified by a guard. The police, instead of talking directly to him, convinced the city coordinator of IPL to take him to Primus Hospital — where the woman’s fiancé was recuperating — as Pomersbach was also injured in the scuffle.
“The city coordinator took him to the hospital, where the police was taking statement of the woman. She identified him and he was arrested,” said a police officer.
Pomersbach was assisted by the Australian Embassy, who were informed about the arrest.
Sources said that for two hours after the incident, Pomersbach kept partying in his hotel room. “During the PCR call, a police team was there and they managed to trace the guard who had seen him. Suddenly, we saw a man coming out of lift with two other cricketers. The guard identified him as Pomersbach,” the officer added. Initially, Pomersbach denied his involvement in the brawl.
Pomersbach had gone to the hotel’s pub to celebrate his team’s win against Delhi Daredevils. There he met the woman and her fiancé.
“He tried to make friends with my fiancé and asked him to have a drink with him in his room,” said the woman, who has been in India for the past two months.
Pomersbach, who made his international debut when he was called into Australia’s Twenty20 side in Perth in December 2007, has a history of misbehaviour under the influence of alcohol.
In 2009, after two hit-and-run incidents in Australia, Pomersbach was arrested and charged for driving with blood alcohol level in excess of the permissible limit. He pleaded guilty and was fined and had his driver’s license cancelled.
The Western Australian Cricket Association suspended him indefinitely. He returned from his ban in January 2010. Pomersbach also played for Kings XI Punjab in IPL’s 2008-09 seasons.
