As the Mamata Banerjee government completed one year of its tenure in West Bengal, the BJP castigated her performance and enticed her to quit UPA II in the same breath.
On Monday, at a rally in Kolkata, where the state BJP released a booklet flaying the government's performance - giving it a 9 on a scale of 100 - party leader Rajnath Singh said they would support an economic bailout package for Bengal if Trinamool Congress severs ties with the ruling alliance.

During former prime minister AB Vajpayee's tenure, between 1999 and 2004, Trinamool was part of the ruling NDA and Banerjee was a minister at the Centre. While she has changed camp since, the BJP appears to be contemplating a renewal of ties.

"West Bengal has a genuine case for special economic bailout package," Singh said on Monday. "But my question to Mamata Banerjee is why is she praying for the package again and again just to be turned down? She should withdraw support from the government and BJP would whole-heartedly back her demand in Parliament."

Claiming that the Union government is burdened with corruption, Singh said Banerjee should not share that burden.
