Here's your list of what to read, listen, eat and watch from the proven experts in the field:Read: Dilip D’Souza, writer and journalist
Cuba And The Night Pico Iyer
The novel captures the place and the mood of Cuba. Iyer has a great eye for absurd scenes of
travel and he brings out the romance and the sadness of Cuba in a way that resonates with us.
Cal Bernard Maclaverty
It’s a love story set in Northern Ireland during the war between Protestants and Catholics. I liked the book and went to meet the author in Glasgow. Though Bernard was a well-known author, he treated me as a VIP and we had a good time.
With The Old Breed Eugene Sledge
Eugene Sledge was a US Marine who fought in the WW II and the book is a memoir of his experiences. It captures the brutality and the craziness of war.
You Cannot Be Serious
John McEnroe The book is an honest autobiography by the tennis player. In the book, he says that while playing tennis, he realised he could see angles on the court which others couldn’t. That’s what told him he was better than the others. It’s a life’s lesson; you need to realise what you can do that others can’t.
Gates Of Fire Steven
Pressfield It’s a story about the Spartans fighting the Persians in Greece. I am very fascinated with war and the book is a fantastic reconstruction of history in a novel form. I even met the author in LA because I liked the book.
Listen: Oliver Sean, singer
ACDC Blow up your video
This is the number one album for me personally because it was the first cassette I ever bought. It completely sealed the deal for me being a guitar player.
George Michael Faith
It is, to date, one of my all time favourite tracks. It also led me to understand why George Michael was one of the youngest songwriters to have so many accolades. He is one of the best songwriters of this century.
All his Albums Genius is the only word I get when I hear Michael’s music, watch his videos or see his performances. He was born to show us magic, and in its truest form, it exists.
Eric Clapton Unplugged
I call Eric Clapton my God, my teacher and my number one idol. I used to practice on my guitar every single day to Eric Clapton’s ‘Unplugged’ album. It made me a better musician.
Are you lonesome tonight It’s just unnatural how Elvis Presley could make women faint with his voice. Elvis Presley’s albums taught me how to make the listener fall in love, cry or laugh just with the voice in the song. He made me realise that I’m lucky to be blessed with a good voice and showed me how to take it further.
Eat: Ritik Bhasin, co-owner LIV, Kala Ghoda
They have great Mediterranean cuisine and their pesto pizza is to die for. Their menu is vast and the ambience is great.
Khyber Kala Ghoda
I’ve been a regular here since my college days and their Mughlai food is to die for. Also, the staff is very hospitable which makes the overall experience great.
Swati Snacks Tardeo
This is one place where the pankhi is irresistible. I end up overeating every time I’m there.
Royal China Bandra
Its authentic Chinese food is mouth watering and I can never miss trying out the duck besides their several other main course meals.
Thai Pavilion Colaba
Whether with my family or my friends, this has been one restaurant where the Green Thai Curry has always been a unanimous choice. Also, they have great service.
Watch: Anees Bazmee, film director
I love this film because the script, setting and acting are all top class. No film has ever managed to achieve what Mughal-e-Azam has achieved in all its forms.
Mother India, 1957
For the first time, the Indian audiences saw a strong female character and the story of a mother who kills her own son. Nargis’s performance can’t be compared to any other actor in the world.
Ganga Jamuna, 1961
This is one of Dilip Kumar’s top performances. The film showcases two brothers, one on the right and the other on the wrong track of life. The way the director managed to show both the sides is exemplary.
Prem Rog, 1982
The film stands out because for the first time we saw a concept of widow remarriage on the Indian screen. That was not prevalent in our society during that time. Plus, the music of the film made it even bigger and drew more audiences.
3 Idiots, 2009
Everything from its direction to screenplay to acting was well thought of. The subject of parents pressurising their children has been dealt with delicately and the credit goes to the director Rajkumar Hirani.
