She is a big star down south (with around 20 films to her credit). However, Ileana D’Cruz has never used her voice in any of her films till date since she wasn’t fluent in the local languages. But as she readies for her Bollywood debut with Barfi!, she finally gets to dub all her lines in the
When Ileana started shooting for Anurag Basu’s film, the director had decided that she would get her voice dubbed by a voiceover artiste since he wanted flawless Hindi from her character. Ileana, on her part, took it up as a big challenge and even hired a language coach.
“Not many knew that she hired a diction trainer during the shooting itself. By the time dubbing was supposed to start, Ileana surprised everyone by speaking in fluent Hindi. That’s when Anurag changed his mind and wanted her to dub in her own voice,” says an insider close to Ileana.
When contacted, Anurag confirms, “Initially, after talking to Ileana, I thought, ‘Chalo, iska voice dub kara lenge’ (we will get her voice dubbed). She also worked very hard on the nuances of the language. Later, I had also asked everyone on the sets to talk to her in Hindi. She is dubbing in her own voice, finally, and I am very happy with whatever she has dubbed till date.”
The Life In A Metro (2007) director is also elated that it’s the first time that Ileana’s voice will be heard in films. “Since she doesn’t know any of the south Indian languages, her voice has always been dubbed. In Barfi!, she is using her own voice for the first time. She is a bit nervous but the results are very good. We are close to completing the dubbing in a few days,” adds Basu.
Interestingly, Ranbir doesn’t have any dialogues in the film since he plays a deaf-mute character, while Priyanka will have “very few” lines.
“So, in essence, Ileana is the voice of my films. But I am content with the way things have gone till now,” says the director.
Barfi! is expected to be released on September 14.
