An inquiry was on to ascertain the motive of Shiladitya Chowdhury, arrested after asking chief minister Mamata Banerjee a question during a rally at the former Maoist stronghold Belpahari, West Bengal director general of police Naparajit Mukherjee said on Monday.

"His posture or gesture was offensive. He also entered into the high security zone while causing disturbance and making provocative arguments," the DGP told a press conference in Kolkata adding there was information that extremist elements could assemble at the meeting to create disturbance.

"While questioning the CM he also came forward by pushing aside the women audience," he said adding the man had initially identified himself as Durjodhan Mahato but was later found to be Shiladitya Chowdhury.

To a question, the DGP said "May be he has a Maoist connection. The inquiry is on to find it. It will also find out if there was negligence on the part of police."

Meanwhile, state panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee accused Chowdhury of conspiring to kill Banerjee.

"Shiladitya is part of the Maoist conspiracy to kill some Trinamool Congress leaders including the chief minister. May be he was planted in the Belpahari meeting for that purpose," he told newsmen.

"Besides Mamata Banerjee, the hit-list included railway minister Mukul Roy and and state industry minister Partha Chatterjee. This incident of Belpahari is not an isolated incident, it is a planned conspiracy to eliminate our leaders," the minister alleged.

The chief minister was going to the hills and Junglemahal taking risks and some forces, were trying to oppose her by creating disturbance.

These forces have the support of a section of city-based intellectuals and were trying to misguide the media by various means, he said.
