Tuesday's 12-hour shutdown in Assam saw a rerun of the violence at Mumbai's Azad Maidan on August 11 as miscreants targeted police and mediapersons.

More than 20 policemen and six mediapersons were injured. Bandh supporters set a newspaper-carrying van and a police jeep on fire in north-central Assam.

The shutdown, called by 31 organisations including the All Assam Minority Students' Union (Aamsu), was against the killing of migrant Muslims in western Assam.

It ended up as a random assault on another minority group of the linguistic kind - Bengali Hindus - leaving one person dead, one missing and more than 80 injured.
