The estranged wife of a suspended police constable walked up to Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh on Saturday morning and sought her husband's job back. The woman, who did not know the reason for his suspension, contended that he would remarry her only if he got his job back. Singh
directed her to the joint commissioner of police (administration) for redressal.
Singh received the woman's plaint on his visit to Bandra police station as part of a newly formulated initiative termed 'Grievance Redressal Day' where top cops visit various police stations across the city to address issues faced by citizens when they approach police stations.
This initiative is to become a weekly feature. At 9.30am on Saturday morning, the first day of the initiative, the commissioner received a rather lukewarm response at Bandra police station with most of those who gathered only wanting to catch a glimpse of the newly-appointed commissioner.
Also, the complaints were civil in nature with people wanting to help the police identify Bangladeshi nationals in the area, wanting help with evicting a tenant, and a nun wanting a room to help children in the area.
Singh said that the initiative would gather steam as more people come to know about it.
"Looking at the general public, one feels the need to overhaul the criminal justice system. We [the police] are a part of this system. I want the general public to know that if they are not satisfied with the police station in their locality, they can come and meet their commissioner," said Singh.
Singh said that he would ensure that the morale of the police force is maintained, and would stand by his men, especially the lower rung officials. "Constables hamari shaan hai [constables are our pride]. If an unintentional mistake is made by them, I will forgive them. I only expect that they work in the ambit of law with complete honesty," said the commissioner.
Top cops including Sadanand Date, joint commissioner of police (law and order) and Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) held similar meetings at various police stations.
