Few stories are as inspiring as that of a man who has overcome cancer successfully. And when that man happens to be cricketer Yuvraj Singh, you can bet that the
story touches thousands of lives.
Now, Yuvraj’s ordeal is soon to air on TV as a three-part documentary created using videos
that were shot during the time he spent in hospital. The film, called Zindagi Abhi Baaki Hai, was shot by his friend and director Gurmeet Sapal. It’s now set to be simulcast on Colors and MTV India. Besides focusing on the cricketer’s struggle, it will also feature stories of courage of other cancer patients.
Yuvraj says, “The General perception is that if you have cancer, you will die. But the rich don’t talk about it when it happens to them, while the poor don’t even realise when they are ill. I want to tell people not to be scared of cancer. I feel everyone should be aware of what’s happening to them and not be in denial.”
The cricketer believes that the film will create wider awareness on occurrence, early detection and treatment of cancer. The film has been created by Yuvraj and his charitable foundation YouWeCan, which helps spread awareness about cancer, especially in small towns. Funds collected through sponsorships for the show will be donated to the foundation. The telecast dates for the series are yet to be decided.
Ask Yuvraj if cancer has changed his outlook towards life, and he says, “Eating, breathing and sleeping normally now feels like an achievement. Through my battle with cancer, I have realised that what’s within us matters more than what lies behind and ahead of us.”
He adds, “Cancer is a disease that can eat through lives. What kept me going was the thought that I had to fight and save my life. Cricket is my life, so I used to think that once I recover, I would definitely play for India which motivated me.”
He is now excited about his return to the game with the World T20 championships later this month. “I’ve been counting days, feeling like a kid who waits eagerly to open a Christmas gift. I feel very proud of myself,” he adds.
