It is not just music festivals that are going multi-city this year. IIT-Bombay’s annual cultural festival, Mood Indigo, is planning to travel to other cities to ensure maximum participation. One of the most popular events on their calendar, the rock band competition, Livewire, is going national this
year. The liminations of the competition will be held in Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru, in addition to Mumbai.
“We wanted to expand the fest to other places so that more bands could get a chance to take part,” says Palash Kulkarni, media head, Mood Indigo 2012. Open to even non-college bands, Livewire invites participation from bands across genres. “It is a semi-professional event where any band can register.” The Bengaluru elims will be held on October 21, Kolkata on 28 and Delhi on November 4, besides Mumbai on December 3. The finals will take place on December 20.Opening act
To register, bands have on log on to Mood Indigo’s portal. “We have received an amazing response. Around 60 bands have registered. We expect the number to rise significantly,” he adds.
Besides lifting the trophy, one of the biggest things that participating bands look forward to is to open for international acts that headline Mood Indigo every year. Last year saw Australian progressive rock outfit Karnivool performing at the campus. Biggies such as Porcupine Tree and Ensiferum have also played at past festivals.
Also, last year, the winning band at Livewire, Verses, got to represent India at the Global Battle of Bands. “They will be performing at London this December as part of the event,” says Palash. Livewire has been the stepping stone for many popular acts such as Parikrama, Pentagram, Vayu and Zygnema. “It is a great stage for upcoming bands to perform in front of an enthusiastic audience,” he says.Going tribal
With this year’s theme being ‘Tribal Tryst’, the festival is also going out of its way to include offbeat events. The winners of an essay contest will get a chance to go on an experiential trip to tribal areas in India.
