Sania Mirza and her Spanish partner Nuria Llagostera Vives made a shock first round exit from the Toray Pan Pacific Open after losing to Darija Jurak and Katalin Marosi, in Tokyo.
The second seeded Indo-Spanish pair lost 0-6 6-4 8-10 to the Croatian-Hungary combination in the
first round of the $ 2,168,400 hard court event.
Sania and Nuria made a good comeback after being bageled in the opening set but lost the Super tie breaker to make an early exit from the tournament.
Caroline Wozniacki saw off Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 in the second round. Maria Sharapova struggled past British qualifier Heather Watson 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-4.
Sao Paulo (Brazil): World champion Viswanathan Anand got tangled in a complicated position and was held to a draw by little-known Spaniard Francisco Vallejo Pons in the first round of the fifth Chess Masters final here.
It was not a desirous start for the Indian ace, who played with white in the opener against the lowest-ranked player in the tournament, and Anand will be hoping for a better performance especially in the return game against Vallejo.
The six-player double round-robin event got off to a good start. Anand shares the third spot on one point.
EB win thriller
Kolkata: East Bengal defeated Kalighat MS 4-3 in a thrilling contest in Siliguri to set up a semi-final showdown with Churchill Brothers in the Federation Cup.
Goals from James Giblee and Tanmoy Kundu gave Kalighat MS a shock two-goal lead but Manandeep Singh netted a brace to make it 2-2.
Chirstopher Chizoba restored Kalighat's lead but Edeh Chidi equalised before halftime from a spot-kick. In the second half, Chidi converted another penalty, which turned out to be the winner. East Bengal finished group winners with seven points, one more than ONGC, who defeated Sporting Clube 2-1 in the other game.
Geeta to lead
New Delhi: A seven-member women's team led by Olympian Geeta Phogat will represent India at the 2012 World Senior Female Wrestling Championship, that gets underway at Edmonton, Canada on Wednesday. While Geeta will spearhead the challenge in the 55kg weight category, Babita Kumar will lead the fight in the 51kg section.
Navjot Kaur will participate in the 67kg segment. India will also be represented through Priyanka Singh (48kg), Shilpi Sheoran (59kg), Sakshi Malik (63kg) and Gurusharan Preet Kaur (72kg).
Dope test a must
New Delhi: The organisers of the Salwan cross country run, to be held on November 4 at the army equestrian centre (Delhi cantonment), have decided to conduct medical test to verify age of the participants. School students from across the country are expected to compete in the age group events. The organizers have also made dope test mandatory for medal winners.
Pune to play hosts
Pune: Pune will host the Asian Rugby Sevens women's championship for the second consecutive year, it was announced. The championship, to be held at the Balewadi Sports Complex athletics stadium on October 6 and 7, is a Sevens Rugby World Cup qualifying tournament.
