Of the many world-ending theories, the one involving the EMP (Electronic Magnetic Pulse) that will destroy all circuits (leading to the destruction of electronic items) on the planet sounds most cinematic; since the melting mountains and tsunamis have already been covered in the hit film, 2012
American TV producer-writer JJ Abrams has put this theory to test in a new show called Revolution. The first few episodes don’t establish how all electricity is lost, but it is. The series starts 15 years after that incident has occurred. Everyone lives on farms and everything is lost, except Zara’s latest fashion line, somehow. However, what did survive are the bars; the scene where the protagonists walk into a big pub tends to bring most followers of post-apocalyptic fiction to an enlightening moment — there will always be alcohol. Even though it might seem impossible and majorly time-consuming, it is possible to make beer, wine, whisky and the gamut without relying on electricity.
In the show, the remains of a hotel in Chicago have been converted into a dive. Candlelit, with wooden barrels strewn around the set, the bar looks like an art-directed version of Woodside Inn, Colaba. We could manage that.
Though the show is Hollywood’s version of what would happen if we survive the apocalypse, back home, farmers in Rampur will score higher on the employment charts than most investment bankers. Cellphones won’t distract you from engaging chats. And Salman Khan will move to doing theatre. ‘Thekas’ will function normally. Life will go on.
So, worry not, if you are a believer and you’re not invited to one of the gazillion end-of-the-world parties that are being organised on December 21 (conveniently a Friday). Just start stocking up on empty barrels and grapes, and your entrepreneurial dream of owning the most happening bar in town will probably come true. Like Homer once said, “Here’s to alcohol: the cause of, and answer to, all of life’s problems.” That’s Homer Simpson, not the Greek poet.
